Let’s face it the people you want to add to your board are probably pretty busy people. They are visible because they are front and center in their volunteer and professional pursuits. They are getting things done. So how do you get these people to be active members of your board. Here are a few tips to evaluate your board’s needs and recruit board members that will grow your organization.
- Be clear on what their responsibilities are. Be as honest as possible. Provide them with documentation of their responsibilities as a board member. Don’t sugar coat it and then except them to fall in line after they agree to participate.
- Be clear about your purpose. Board members volunteer their time because they care about missions. Does their interest match the mission?
- Be ready for them. Do you have materials ready for them. Do you have past financials, meeting minutes, reports and other historical data so they catch up quickly?
- Do they fit the bill? Do you need their skill on the board? Engaged board members need a purpose not another meeting to attend.
- Do they have the time? Recognized that a person has only so much capacity. If this isn’t the right time keep the communication open so that when there is time you gain a valued board member.
